Liberia: U.S. Defense Institute Trains 23 Liberians

The United States Defense Institute of International Legal Studies in collaboration with the U.S. Navy's Africa Partnership Station has ended a four-day training seminar on the rule of law in maritime security for the personnel of several government ministries and agencies.

Speaking Tuesday at the end of the training held at the Mamba Point Hotel in Monrovia, the Commander of the United States Coast Guard Patricia J. Hill said the training focused on international maritime security and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

According to her, other topics discussed at the seminar include Law of the Sea on Legal Division and Coastal State Rights, International Ship and Port Security, International Response to Illegal Fishing, Maritime Security as well as Maritime Domain Awareness.

She told the participants that the training was meant to prepare them for the re-organization of the Liberian Coast Guard so as to protect the country's maritime.

Commander Hill admonished the participants to utilize the skills acquired to enhance the overall good of Liberia's maritime security.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Assistant Defense Minister for Naval Affairs Timothy Grandoe, commended the United States Government for realizing the need to train Liberians in the rule of law in maritime security.

He said the training would greatly help in the re-organization of the Liberian Coast Guard.

Assistant Minister Grandoe assured that they would practicalize the knowledge acquired.
