The fifth triennial congress of the Gambia Press Union (GPU) is now history. The issues raised were contentious; the debate was intense as speaker after speaker rose up and spoke with passion. It was democracy in action.

In the end a free and transparent election of officers of the GPU was conducted by the Independent Electoral Commission. Prior to the congress a list of GPU members qualified to vote was posted at the GPU offices. The GPU sent public notices to media houses to publish that the list was available for inspection by all members.

It goes without saying that the occupation of a leadership position should not be for fame or gain but to inspire and lead the members in the pursuit of their common aims and objectives.

The jubilation is over and the dust has settled. Now is the time to move forward.

A resolution which summed up the concerns of participants was passed. The Executive needs to pay heed to this. It needs to strive to attain higher heights than the former executive - more extensive and intensive training of journalists, greater freedom of expression, greater participation and unity of the media fraternity, greater viability of media houses and improved employment conditions, among others.

There is also the need to adopt a new constitution to reflect the new reality, and there is a consensus on this.

Needless to say, for the executive to be effective it must ensure the support and participation of the membership that it serves. The membership needs to take ownership of the GPU. This means attending monthly general meetings and expressing their views and taking decisions at these meetings. It also means participating in other activities of the GPU.
