The Commission on Human Rights and Administration Justice (CHRAJ) has called on the media to collaborate with the commission, to campaign against human right abuses in the country.
This call was made at a media sensitization programme in Accra.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ, Mr. Richard Quayson, since the establishment of the commission, it has pursued and would continue to pursue an agenda aimed at realizing the vision of a free, just and equitable society, where fundamental human rights are protected and power is accountable.
This agenda, he said, would further be achieved if the commission investigated complaints of violations of human rights, abuse of office, unfair treatment by public officers and corruption in the corridors of government.
"Whilst our powers of investigation have been exercised to check abuse and right wrongs, the Commission recognizes that a more effective approach to uphold the human rights and freedoms in society is by making respect for human rights and human dignity, a way of life for the people," he said.
He said that the resilience of the peace enjoyed in the nation, was as a result of the growing culture of respect for human rights and human dignity.
"Our gender, therefore, is to deepen this culture of respect for human rights and human dignity, and make it the way of life for all persons," he said.
The Deputy Commissioner indicated that the commission was doing all it could to promote and inculcate values of integrity and accountability within the body politic, and help to fight corruption in all its forms.
This, according to Mr. Quayson was the surest way to develop peace, security and friendly relations within the nation, ensure dignity and worth of the human person, and promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.
He said that the Commission alone cannot achieve this, and therefore required credible partners, who do not see themselves merely as being involved, but who are totally committed to defend the cause of freedom and of right.
|
To this effect, the Deputy Commissioner called on the media, whom he believed has the capacity to reach large segments of people in the society, coupled with their traditional watchdog role of safeguarding the interests of the people, to assist in this regard.
He said that this would offer them the opportunity to deepen their relationship and the cooperation that existed.
He further mentioned that their partnership should begin a new wave of human rights consciousness, which would be empowered with human rights knowledge, and values, to uphold the rights of one another in society.
