Liberia: Extend National Census Time

Monrovia — A member of the House of Representatives is appealing to the government and the Liberia Institute of Statistic and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) to extend the census days to enable enumerators collect all the necessary data.

Representative Francis Karway said the time was too short for the collection of accurate data throughout the country.

Describing the process as tedious, he said to have a candid and complete data, the government and LISGIS must extend the time.

He told reporters that the process was moving on a snail pace and feared that enumerators would not cover the entire country if the census days were not extended. Representative Karway, who just returned from Nimba where he was counted, said the task is mind-numbing for the few enumerators in the county.

He said for instance, "in town like Boysonor near Sanniquellie, I saw two enumerators who have the challenge of counting residents of the area."

Mr. Karway said the work was wearisome in rural Liberia because enumerators have to walk distances to take statistics, adding "I monitored the process in my County; the enumerators are good, but they need time to collect all the necessary data that we need for development," he added.
