Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki underscored the need for trade unions to strengthen their organizational capacity, and thus live up to expectation. He made the remarks during a meeting today at the Denden Hall here in the capital with representatives of the Trade Union Federation of Eastern Africa (TUFEA) taking part in the Regional Conference on the Role of Trade Unions in Regional Integration in Africa.
Expressing his appreciation to the representatives for participating in the current regional conference here, the President noted that the externally financed so-called 'civil society' is designed to weaken the role of trade unions. He further underlined that trade unions should play their due role in resolving conflicts, and that a lot remains to be done on their part to this end.
Voicing goodwill and success to the trade unions, President Isaias also wished a happy stay to the conference participants in Asmara.
As regards the TPLF regime's occupation of sovereign Eritrean territory, he indicated that the Eritrean territories still remain under continued occupation due to the failure of the international community to fulfill its responsibility. President Isaias further explained that Eritrea is repeatedly calling on the international community to fulfill its obligation.
The representatives of the TUFEA on their part briefed the President on the background of the Federation and the conference underway in Asmara. They also expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to them.
Moreover, the representatives of the TUFEA stated that the peace and security they have witnessed in Eritrea is an outcome of the efficient administration of the people and Government of Eritrea.
