Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail, Sudanese Presidential Advisor, stated that the absence of reliable security is the main political challenge in the African continent, in general, and in East Africa, in particular. He made the remarks in a paper he presented at the Regional Conference on the Role of Trade Unions on Regional Integration in Africa, underway here in Asmara.

Dr. Mustafa indicated that tackling the existing unreliable security should emanate from the capacity of the countries and organizations concerned, as well as their commitment to resolve it, and not only from the magnitude of the challenge itself. Expressing his appreciation to Eritrea for hosting such a significant regional conference, he pointed out that before examining the political challenges in the Eastern Africa region one should realize that although each nation has its own distinct history, culture and challenges, there nonetheless exist common factors in all countries of the region.

Dr. Mustafa further stated that although the Eastern Africa region is endowed with rich natural resources, these potentials could not be effectively harnessed in the common interest and development of the people of the region due to the continued conflict and, as such, poverty has become another challenge of the region. In this regard, he expressed conviction that regional integration could be the means of meeting these challenges.

Similarly, Mr. Yemane Gebremeskel, Director of the Office of the President, underlined that the main problem hindering the resolution of conflicts in the region is external interference and lack of strong regional organizations, as well as failure to take the necessary measures against the party that commits wrongdoings.

A Sudanese delegation headed by Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail arrived in Asmara early today to attend the regional conference. The delegation was accorded a warm welcome by Mr. Abdalla Jabir, Head of Organizational Affairs at the PFDJ, and Mr. Tekeste Baire, Secretary General of the NCEW. Moreover, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Federation of Eastern Africa (TUFEA), Prof. Ibrahim Gendur, and a representative of the Ugandan Trade Union arrived here in the capital today to participate in the conference.
