Youth polytechnics will teach Information and Communication Technology and entrepreneurship skills after the revision of curriculum.

Coast provincial youth affairs director Helen Nthiga said the revised curriculum was part of Government efforts to improve training in youth polytechnics.

"Other subjects to be introduced in youth polytechnics include entrepreneurship and communication skills, beauty therapy and metal technology," she said.

Ms Nthiga noted that youths joining the polytechnic must be taught basic computer skills in order to cope with changes in a digital world.

She said the entrepreneurial skills would help students start and manage their own businesses with ease after college. "The new curriculum has been published and certified by the Kenya Institute of Education. It has already been piloted in different polytechnics within the province as from March this year. "The Ministry of Youth Affairs has joined hands with the Ministry of Education ensure subjects offered in polytechnics are not outdated," she said.

The pilot programmes had started in Masimo polytechnic in Malindi, Mwanjila in Taita, Vitengeni in Kilifi and Ukunda in the South Coast.

Ms Nthiga said the civil service commission had employed 750 instructors and 2,500 workers to push the new curricular. The ministry had also earmarked Sh5 million monthly to pay employees.
