Kenya: Basketball - Champions' Defence Off to a Flyer As Coast Games Begin

All the defending champions on Wednesday won their opening matches with ease as the Coast Provincial Secondary Schools term one games started at the Wundanyi Stadium, Dr Aggrey, Kenyatta High School Mwatate and Taveta Academy schools.
Defending girls' basketball champions, Mombasa High School, humiliated Eldoro from Taveta 173-10, while boys' basketball champions Shimba Hills beat St Georges 74-57.
In sevens rugby, defending champions Kwale High hit Kaya Tiwi 29-07.
Mombasa High, who are also the reigning national and East Africa champions, made minced meat of Eldoro from Taveta hitting them by a massive margin of 163 points in an outrageously one sided match which had to be temporarily stopped after Mombasa High filled the score sheet forcing the organisers to improvise for the game to continue.
After taking a 34-04 first quarter lead, Mombasa who had Purity Adhiambo and Mildred Olumasi score 43 points each stepped up the tempo to lead 83-05 at the break.
The second half saw the champions field a second string team of Susan Akinyi, Winnie Juma, Penina Omala, Dorothy Akinyi and Mwijabu Mwidadi but they still overwhelmed their opponents to win the third quarter 42-02 and fourth 46-03. Other scorers for Mombasa were Evelyn Adhiambo who scored 36 points, Susan Akinyi 21 and Diana Sarah 13.
Khadija Yusuf (six) and Lydia Pama (two) were scorers for Eldoro who are representing Taveta District recently carved out of Taita Taveta.
In the opening boys' match, defending champions Shimba Hills registered a morale boosting 74-57 victory over stubborn St Georges from Kilifi. Sila Kalama, Ernest Kalama, and Vincent Omolo starring for St Georges gave Shimba Hills and early scare with quick and incisive passes which resulted into brilliant penetration and well executed three pointers as they trailed 11-18 in the first quarter and 37-23 at the break.
But the experience of Nelson Omondi, Alex Opere and Mwalimu Heri came in handy as they took control of the game never looking back.
Opere led the score card for Shimba Hills with 23 points while Omondi made 12 while Vincent Omolo managed 22 points for St Georges.
In other matches, Mwasere Girls from Taveta defeated St Johns Girls Kaloleni 40-24 while Kinango Secondary beat Mbaraki Girls 18-12 in another match.

In the early rugby match, defending champions Kwale High beat Kaya Tiwi Secondary 29-07. Girls' hockey defending champions, St Johns Kaloleni, defeated Chumani Secondary from Malindi 4-0, while the boys' hockey champions Kilifi Township stopped Kenyatta High 2-1.
