FLY540, a Kenyan airline that recently started plying the Entebbe route, has introduced freight services for East and Central Africa using a Fokker 27 aircraft, reports Emmy Olaki.

The service is available for charter and has a capacity of 5.5 tonnes, the carrier said in a statement.

The statement said the freighter picks up loads from the cargo centre at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and from Wilson Airport. All handling of goods is carried out by Fly540 personnel and their agents.

"The aircraft is being used to transport all kinds of goods including general cargo, medicine, fresh produce and mining equipment to Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, DR Congo, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and the Comoros Islands."

Sammy Nzoka, the operations and logistics executive, explained: "There is a high demand for air cargo transport and freighting horticultural produce to the Comoros Islands. We are in the process of acquiring a second Fokker 27 to meet the demand."

Fly540 is one of the latest competitors to the hitherto monopolist Kenya Airways on the Entebbe-Nairobi route. The company does passenger services on the route at relatively cheaper rates.
