Oyo State government yesterday vowed to shut illegal and substandard nursery and primary schools in the state in the wake of a collapsed building which killed some pupils of a private school in the state capital on Tuesday.

Oyo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja handed down the warning even as the state's police command admitted error in the casualty figure declared in the incident.

Arapaja who paid an unscheduled visit to the school lamented the unhygienic environment of the school, describing it as a threat to the lives of the innocent pupils.

He sued for the cooperation of the people of the state when strict measures on mushroom schools are being taken, pleading that the decision should not be politicized.

Arapaja flayed the silence of the neighbours of the school before the Tuesday's tragic incident, urging the people to offer information that could assist the government deal with proprietors of mushroom schools.

Police spokesperson, Bisi Okuwobi in a press statement said, "it is pertinent to accurately inform the public and the press that the actual number of pupils of Living Water Nursery and Primary School that died in the disaster is two as against 13 that was earlier confirmed.

"The Oyo State Police Command accepts responsibility for the earlier error which was not deliberate. After a preliminary investigation, it was reliably gathered that one and pupil died at the scene of the collapsed wall while another one died at the early hours of today {yesterday} while receiving medical treatment."

"The error in the number of the dead pupils is highly regretted. We pray God to comfort the parents of the two dead pupils and for the quick recovery of the injured ones."

Following media reports on the tragedy ,the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana also dispatched a delegation to the school to commiserate with the proprietor and parents of the victims.
