A heavy storm has destroyed gardens in Bwera, Nyarurambi and Nyamasegwa villages in Kamwenge district. According to the LC1 chairman of Mpanga cell, William Kamili, the storm also killed goats and several head of cattle last week.

He added that the Government had not come to their rescue. Kamili said famine was looming in the area because the residents had planted all the seeds and their gardens were destroyed.

He said in March last year, the area was hit by a heavy storm.

He added that the area MP, Frank Tuwebaze, and the Kamwenge LC5 chairman, Edward Musingye, visited the affected villages to asses the damage.

The Damasiko Church, which was under construction, was deroofed and part of the wall collapsed, said the parish priest, the Rev. Godfrey Zinkubire.

The walls developed cracks, he added. "It was only the windows and doors that were remaining to be installed but we are now back to square one. Even the people, who would contribute the funds, are helpless."

Helse Nyamutaze, 65, a resident of Mpanga Cell, said her house and beans, cassava and maize gardens were destroyed.

"I do not know how life will be. We ask the Government to help us," she appealed.
