THE Government is to construct science laboratories, libraries and staff houses to improve the academic standards of Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools.

The education state minister, Peter Lokeris, made the pledge last week while celebrating the excellent performance of students of St. Paul SS in Kamuli in last year's examinations.

Flanked by Buzaya county MP Isaac Musumba, Lokeris said technical schools would also be built for O' Level candidates to study vocational courses.

The headmaster, Reuben Lufafa, was concerned that the Uganda Examination Board had threatened to close their centre for lack of an examination hall and a science laboratory.

"Due to vast enrolment for S1 and S2, students lack furniture, the buildings are inadequate and at times classes are conducted under trees. We do not have a library and text books," Lufafa said.

The district chairman, Steven Mubiru, promised to connect the school and a nearby health centre to a water grid.
