Botswana: All is Well That Ends Well

26 March 2008

editorial

Gaborone — Although all the police reports are not complete, the general indication is that the Easter holidays have generally been quieter and without major incidents. It is during holidays such as these one that we experience mishaps like road accidents and theft, robberies and other violent crimes.

Various police stations across the country are reporting a quieter Easter, which is very positive. Credit must go to the people who we presume must have been vigilant on the roads. We could not remain impervious to the precious lives that we lost on our roads. The rate of death on our roads during holidays has been very alarming and we just had to say enough at some point.

Of course we are aware that people including our ever vigilant police officers and officials of the department of transport and other organisations such as MVA and KBL have over the years made it a point that every holiday they start a roadside crusade along major highways to educate the public on safe ways of driving and travel. There is no doubt that these messages and successive campaigns have over the years borne fruit. Until the day every driver and passenger has internalised the road safety messages, the campaigns must continue.

Although crime is on the increase, particularly house-breaking, there is every indication that neighbourhood watch groups, security companies, the police and vigilant neighbours would eventually prevail and thwart criminals. We want to commend everybody who tried to make this Easter a pleasant one for all. We should not rest on our laurels for the enemy is advancing at a terrifying speed.

IEC appoints chair

Relevant Links

At long last the IEC has appointed chairperson after Justice John Mosojane resigned. The IEC is too important an institution to operate without a chairperson. We welcome the appointment of Justice Stephen Gaongalelwe as IEC boss and our hope is that he will fight with zeal the issues that Mosojane complained about. At all times, the IEC ought to be seen to be impartial and independent and we have full trust that Gaongalelwe would tag the IEC along this road.

Zebras and Warriors

The Warriors of Zimbabwe lock horns with the Zebras at the National Stadium in an international friendly tonight. We want to appeal to supporters to maintain the good relationship that obtain between the two countries. We do not anticipate any collision. In the past, we have been disappointed when joy or emotions that have nothing to do with the beautiful game over-spilled in the terraces. Let us all go out and support our teams. After the game, let us all laugh and savour the beautiful moments. We commit to spread SADC love and brotherhood at the game.
