The Minister of Water Resources and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Munacho Mutezo, on Tuesday said Government would continue working towards improving the quality education in rural areas countrywide.

In an interview yesterday, Eng Mutezo said he was keen to see that students learning in Chimanimani West accessed the best education. He said as a result of these concerns, Government - through President Mugabe - had sourced computers for the benefit of several schools countrywide.

"Education is key in human and economic development. This is why for the past five years I have been working closely with various schools to see how and which areas we can continue to improve the quality of education of our children," he said.

He said it was gratifying to note that Government had since 1980 prioritised the building of schools. What was left was to ensure the structures put in place were fully utilised. "Computer learning in primary and secondary schools is critical in building a solid foundation that prepares the students for challenges in the ever-changing job market. "We want computer learning to be a basic learning requirement in the same manner it is in other countries," said Eng Mutezo. He said at least 20 computers had so far been donated to St Charles Luanga and Hot Springs secondary schools.

Eng Mutezo said he was looking at ways of ensuring that school-leavers who had not benefited from the computer learning were not disadvantaged. "We have already identified areas where computer learning will be conducted at a minimal fee. We realise that these are hard times and most parents cannot afford to send their children for any training.

"My wish is to see our youths getting involved in programmes that shape them into responsible future parents," he said. Eng Mutezo said apart from introducing computer learning in schools and colleges he has also introduced carpentry, building and dressmaking to empower school-leavers who did not do well at "O" Level. President Mugabe has been donating state-of-the-art computers to various schools countrywide as part of Government's national programmes to ensure all schools have computers.

Meanwhile, Buhera North Member of Parliament Cde William Mutomba has pledged to assist people in his constituency by providing them with staff, equipment and drugs at two clinics that have not been operating for the past eight years.

The two clinics are Chawatama and Berenyazvivi in Dorowa. Some of the people living near the two clinics are forced to travel for more than 25km to Murambinda Hospital to seek treatment. As a result of transport problems in the area, patients used scotchcarts while others walked to the hospital. "I would like to assure you that the two clinics would soon be operational, so that you won't have to travel for long distances to seek treatment," said Cde Mutomba in an interview yesterday.

Cde Mutomba said he was also going to help them with some of the equipment and the completion of some of the buildings and nurses' houses at the two clinics.

Some officials at these clinics have been reportedly misusing the funds earmarked for construction. Cde Mutomba said Government would soon investigate these allegations.
