Luanda — The African Sports Confederation of Disable (ASCOD), whose third congress happens this Thursday, in Luanda, has an Angolan at the helm of the communication and marketing department, ANGOP learnt.
Leonel da Rocha Pinto occupies the post of deputy-director of that institution's communication and marketing division since 1999, due to his engagement in favour of the development of disability sports in the country and in Africa.
Mr Pinto, who is also the current chairman of the Angolan Paralympics Committee (CPA), was in the same year elected as the chairman of the zone VI (Southern Africa region) of ASCOD.
Whilst directing the CPA, Leonel Pinto has positively influenced the development of this sport in Angola. Under his management a development strategy was implemented and allowed Angola to have a place of privilege in the world in terms of sports achievements.
Due to this, he was voted as the sports official for the year 2000 by the Sports newspaper and in 2004 he received the same nomination from the "Radio 5" sports channel of the National Radio of Angola (RNA).
It was under his leadership that Angola's disability sports won, through José Sayovo at the 2005 Athens Paralympics Games, three gold medals and beat the respective world records in the 100, 200 and 400 metre races for blind people.
Born on 28 April 1962, in Quibala, coastal Kwanza Su province, this sports official is also a member of the financial commission of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC).
