Nigeria: Energy Probe - Okonjo-Iweala to Appear Before Reps Today

Former Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will today appear before the House of Representatives Power and Steel Committee probing the award of contracts in the Nigeria Independent Power Project (NIPP) by the administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, currently Managing Director of World Bank served in Obasanjo's government as Minister of Finance and later briefly as foreign Affairs Minister.
A member of the committee who does not want his name mentioned told Daily Champion that the former Minister will appear before the committee at 1pm.
He stated that the World Bank MD had indicated interest to appear before the Committee through her counsel.
The woman, he said initially failed to honour earlier invitation by the committee, claiming that she was not aware of the invitation which was published in some newspapers.

"We invited her before but she said that she didn't see the open invitation which was carried in a newspaper publication", the source said, stressing "she later indicated readiness to appear through her lawyer".
Though he refused to name areas where the former minister will speak, he explained that "she will clarify some vital issues".
Meanwhile, another Minister in the Obasanjo cabinet and current Vice President of World Bank (Africa) Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili has indicated interest to appear before the probe committee. The date of her appearance is yet to be fixed.
