THE Lusaka High Court has sentenced a street vendor to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a two-year-old girl.

High Court Judge, Tamula Kakusa, sent to jail Obrian Kabwe, 37, of Lusaka's Chibolya township after the matter was referred to him for sentencing.

According to evidence in court, the girl was playing with her friends around 07:00 hours in the morning when Kabwe took her in the ditch and defiled her.

In another incidence, a 22 year-old man has also been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling his two-year-old cousin.

Simon Kafunga of Chilenje township was accused of defiling the girl on November 3 2006.

Evidence in court was that on November 3, 2006, the mother of the girl noticed that the baby was not playing around as always and when she inquired she was informed that the girl was heard crying from Kafunga's bedroom.

The court heard that when the girl's mother asked Kafunga why he liked playing with the baby, he replied that he saw nothing wrong with that.

But when the girl was asked what was wrong, she informed her mother that Kafunga had inserted his fingers in her vagina causing bruises.

Later when they went to the clinic, it was confirmed that the baby had been defiled and advised to report the matter to the police. Before they could reach the police station, Kafunga fled until he was arrested by the police.
