Zimbabwe: Actor Called in By Police Over Play

Zimbabwean police called in actor Silvanos Mudzvova on Monday for questioning over a controversial play that was set to run in the capital Harare for two weeks.
Mudzvova -- who said he was not going to be intimidated by the police ahead of the Saturday ballot -- remained adamant the play would go ahead as scheduled.
The play, titled Sahwira (Spirit of friendship) depicts Zimbabwe in the family of nations where the country would have strong relations with developed countries in a bid to foster economic development.
Mudzvova claimed that he was summonned to Harare Central Police Station by Inspector Mhondoro (first name not given) where he was warned against running the play.
The comedian said, after interrogation, he was summonned to appear in court on April 17 together with fellow actor Anthony Tongani on charges arising from their arrest six months ago over another politically charged play entitled Final Push.
It is still unclear which charges have been levelled against the comedians.
Despite the threats by the police to stop the showcasing of the play, Mudzvova insisted the comedy would go ahead as planned saying it was his democratic right to present his views to the nation.

He also alleged that the police criticized human rights lawyer Alec Muchadehama for portraying Zimbabwe in bad light.
Muchadehama reportedly told police during the showcasing of Final Push that they were "contributing to (the) death of democracy and free speech in Zimbabwe."
No immediate was obtained from police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena.
