Vodacom Tanzania head of sponsorship and communications Ephraim Mafuru and miss Tanzania pageant national Coordinator, Hashim Lundenga lauch this year's contest in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Vodacom Tanzania has set aside a Sh600 million sponsorship package for this year�s Miss Tanzania beauty pageant, the mobile phone company announced yesterday.

The package covers zonal events that will precede the final programmed for July in Dar es Salaam, according to Vodacom head of sponsorships and communications Ephraim Mafuru.

The company is sponsoring the competition for the third successive year, and Mr Mafuru called on prospective contestants to turn up in large numbers to compete in qualifying events.

He said Vodacom was proud to be involved in the development of youth, adding that the company would continue to support the competition, which determines Tanzania�s representative in the Miss World contest.

The official said the contest provided young women with the opportunity to launch careers in modelling and fashion, thus empowering them.

Mr Mafuru added that Vodacom appreciated the role played by First Lady Salma Kikwete in making last year�s event a success. Mrs Kikwete visited the finalists as they were rehearsing for the 2007 contest won by Richa Adhia.

Mr Tanzania national coordinator Hashim Lundenga thanked Vodacom for its continued support.

He asked parents to allow their daughters to take part in the contest, saying this would enhance Tanzania�s chances of getting a worthy representative in events such as the Miss World competition.
