POWA Plaza in Umuahia, Abia State, has been submerged by flood, destroying goods and other properties.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) also observed that all the 300 shops in the plaza were affected, while many shop owners who came to resume business in the morning broke down and wept.

Among items submerged were electronics, computers, generators, telephone handsets, photocopiers and clothing materials.

One of the shop owners, Mr Chidi Okenyi, blamed the flood on the refusal to build proper drainage systems. He also blamed residents, who dispose waste on the erosion channel, adding that he lost handsets and accessories worth N320,000. He said some landlords also built on erosion channel on Niger road in Umuahia.
