Nigeria: Falilat Foundation Unveils Abuja City Marathon

Former Nigeria track and field star, Chief Falilat Ogunkoya-Omotayo will today in Abuja, the Nigerian Federal Capital unveil the first Abuja City Marathon.

The 42 kilometres Marathon which will be held later in the year is coming under the auspices of the Falilat Foundation.

Disclosing this yesterday to the media, the founder of the foundation, Falilat Omotayo revealed that the Minister of State in the Federal Capital will inaugurate the 10-member committee that will see to the planning and execution of the Marathon, the first of its kind in Abuja.

"The Minister will inaugurate the committee Thursday here in Abuja. The committee is headed by a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Professor Veronica Igbanugo who is also the chairperson of the Falilat Foundation while Doctor G.C Ogu, the FCT director of sports will serve as the secretary.

Falilat also disclosed that her Foundation decided to come up with Abuja City Marathon idea because Abuja is one of the very few mega-cities in the world that does not have a full marathon.

"Lagos already has a marathon albeit it is half marathon. The Foundation believes the beautiful city of Abuja deserves to have one that will project it to the outside world," she explained.
