Liberia: Minister Craves for Youth Participation

Benjamin B. Sworh

27 March 2008

Monrovia — Agriculture Minister Dr. Chris Toe has underscored the need for youth participation in the agriculture sector of the country.

He said the active participation of youth in the agriculture sector would be a major boost, because according to him, they are the future generation.

Dr. Toe made the assertion Tuesday at a 3-day National Validation workshop on Food and Agriculture Policy and Strategy which was held at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.

The Agriculture Minister stressed that youth involvement in the production of food was cardinal to the poverty reduction strategy.

He challenged the participants to formulate policies that would take into account the interest of the public in order to achieve its objectives.

Dr. Toe said the workshop is aimed at the formulation and subsequent promulgation of the food and agriculture policy for Liberia.

Also speaking on behalf of the Liberia National Farmers Union LINFU, Mr. Alphonso Z. Kromah recommended that the Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI) should be granted an autonomous status.

Mr. Kromah added that granting CARI autonomous status would make it independent to enable the entity solicit funding and technical assistance from donors.

The workshop brought together participants from the civil society, government ministries and agencies as well as FDA, among others.

Thanks very much Minister Toe for the workshop on food production. I it is now time that all Liberians get involve into food production. Let us learn from the citizens of Lofa county. Rice is our stable food and we can not always wait for the government to import rice. Those politians that are always saying that rice can be sold for $5 or $10 are causing more harm then good. Most of them have lived in the U S A and other places and they know the price of rice. Here in the U S A ,a bag of rice is not less then $20. Mr. Minister, thanks again and we will keep encouraging our young people and even the older ones that we all need to work towards the production of more food. We can not sit and expect people to always send chicken feet, turkey wings, pigs feet and the list goes on and on. Let us take pride in doing something for ourselves and then others will come in to help when they see the seriousness in us. It's me luckygirl2021
