Within the last decade, government has been putting more emphasis on professional studies.
After several years of mutation, the Cameroon higher educational system has gradually fine-tuned the higher educational system through the introduction of several professional training programmes in all the six state universities as well as in the private sectors of academic training. On instructions from the Head of State, enormous structural, infrastructural and strategic reforms are been carried throughout educational set up in Cameroon. The objectives of the academic reforms code-named, "One Student, One Employment" is aimed at reducing unemployment by making the youths self-employed.
Thus, to take the bull by the horn, the government decided to create specialised higher education departments in nearly all the six state institutions. According to the programme, the University of Dschang trains senior agric experts while the University of Ngaoundere has an agro-industrial option. Douala University caters for youths interested in modern industrial techniques and the University of Yaounde II specialises in the training of jurists and the University of Yaounde I centres its training on literary and scientific aspirants.
Despite these measures which have been going on for more than two decades with much successes, the government through the Minister of Higher Education, Jacque Fame Ndongo did not go to sleep. The year 2007 witnessed the implementation of the support programme for the technological and professional component of the higher education studies. The objectives of this programme is to maximise the higher education training offer in the medical, technological and teacher training fields by carrying out the following;
The faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Douala, the faculty of Industrial Engineering in Douala, the faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Buea and the Advanced Teachers Training college in Maroua.
Apart from putting in place these institutions, the Ministry of Higher Education effectively launched the recruitment of 1000 teachers and put in place the BMD system of education for university graduates. The objectives of the BMD system are aimed at professionalizing the different courses that are offered and the promotion of the academic culture.
At the social level, the Ministry of Higher Education has also registered several positive results. First it has introduced a veritable insurance policy and successfully sensitized the students on the dangers of sexually transmissible diseases. Furthermore, the ministry has put in place a centre for the preparation of candidates for CAMES professional examination.
