Emir of Bwari, Dr Musa Ijakoro, has called for early procurement and distribution of fertilisers to farmers in the country.

Ijakoro made the call in Abuja while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bwari, FCT.

He said early procurement and distribution of fertilisers would go a long way in stabilising farmers before the commencement of the farming season.

"Now is the right time to commence the distribution of the commodity as it has started raining", Ijakolo said. He said it had become imperative to make the call to avoid a situation "where farmers will start planting and there is no fertiliser to augment the local manure". Ijakoro said it was the responsibility of both the federal, state and local governments to procure, supply and distribute fertilisers to farmers.

"As a farmer I know that if you don't have fertiliser, it is like you are alive but completely paralysed.

"Therefore, it is very important to commence the procurement and distribution of the commodity in good time", he added.

The traditional ruler said although there was little rainfall last year the provision of adequate fertilisers would have reduce the impact on crops.

Ijakoro also appealed to the government to dualise the Dutse Alhaji - Bwari road in FCT, to ease movement along the busy road. "You can see that the number of accidents along the road has increased even before the rains; we should expect more when the rains start proper", he said.
