IN music circles, it has been an open secret, but the reason for female artiste of the year, Sophie Nantongo's exit from Eagles Production Band, was never made public.

Well, she was finally compelled to let the cat out of the bag at the City Beat 'Party With Your Stars' which featured herself and artiste of the year, Ronald Mayinja, at Club Pa Lui, Ntinda, last week.

This followed a question from a fan who wanted to know why the songstress quit Eagles Production in 2002.

Hesitant, Nantongo cast a glance at her former director (Mayinja) who gave her a go-ahead to spill the beans. She then shocked everyone by revealing that she left because she was being underpaid. Apparently, she was paid a paltry sh2,000 per show regardless of where it was!

Mayinja did not deny Nantongo's claims, but defended the band directors' decision to pay her so little thus: "At that time Sophie's value was sh2,000! She virtually had no hit song."

But Nantongo, who now commands sh1.5m per show, begs to differ. She claims that Pima Ebiseera, her "hit" song at the time, was certainly worth much more than the pocket change she earned and that is why she threw in the towel.

Well, good thing you ran when you did girl, look how far you have come.
