Uganda: Nine Killed, 45 Injured in Accidents

NINE people perished yesterday and over 45 suffered serious injuries in accidents across the country. In one case, three people died when a coach overturned and caught fire on the Masaka-Mbarara highway.

Masaka Police said the accident, which injured 36 people, occurred at Kingo near Masaka town. The driver of the bus, which was travelling from Mbarara, lost control, the Police added.

"He could have dozed off," said Masaka Police chief Stephen Tanui.

The Police put out the fire.

Some survivors escaped unscathed.

In another accident, three vendors died when a fuel tanker crashed them on Mubende Road as they sold snacks to travellers on a bus that had stopped at a veterans' market.

In Jinja, three pedestrians were knocked dead and eight injured as a motorist tried to save a street child at Total fuel station at Mailo Mbiri on the‚ Jinja-Bugiri highway.

One of the dead was identified as David Okello of Walukuba suburb near the town.
