THE works ministry is to start repairing part of the Kampala-Jinja highway at Kigombya in Mukono. Minister John Nasasira yesterday said the contractor, Stirling, was instructed to install the culverts.

"On Wednesday morning, our chief maintenance engineer, Bisuti Balamu, together with our area engineer, Munyambaza, handed over the site to the contractor."

According to the minister, the officers also held a meeting with the Police and agreed that heavy vehicles would be diverted to Kayunga road as the repairs were being undertaken. Light vehicles, he added, would continue using the Kampala-Jinja road.

Nasasira explained that the pothole at Kigombya was created after the culvert collapsed due to a downpour on Easter Monday.

Nasasira said he was disappointed by the remarks made by Jackson Muwanika, a policeman, that no ministry official showed up at the scene to fix the problem when contacted.

"On Tuesday, we sent the assistant district engineer, Byekwaso, to put emergency warning signs on the road and assess the damage."

The highway is the main import and export route to Kenya and Mombasa.
