The Regional conference on the Role of Trade Unions in Regional Integration concluded today adopting resolutions, recommendations and a future action plan.
In the conference, which was attended by representatives of trade unions from more than 10 countries, different papers were presented focusing on conflict resolution, strengthening trade unions, the role of trade unions in economic growth and other significant issues.
Speaking at the closing session, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Federation of Eastern Africa (TUFEA), Prof. Ibrahim Gendur, outlined the Federation's future programs. He pointed out that a general meeting of the Federation would take place once in four years; the time and venue of such a meeting is to be decided by the Executive Council of the Federation, taking into consideration proposals put forth by country representatives, among others.
The resolutions and recommendations adopted by the Conference include an assertion that the existing conflicts and poverty in Africa are closely linked with the inhumane strategies of international organizations sponsored by western countries, as well as the fact that the prevailing instability in this region is due to the interference of external forces, especially the United States. In addition, the resolutions and recommendations highlight the need to develop a common vision and understanding in the region; develop tactical and long-term strategies on the part of trade unions; put forth a proposal and strategy on the re-establishment of trade unions in Somalia; the need to develop the necessary strategy and policy towards fostering economic integration in the region, and the like.

Also speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tekeste Baire, Secretary General of the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW), noted that valuable experience and knowledge has been acquired thanks to the participation of a number of experts in the regional conference. He further called on the participants to work for the implementation of the resolutions and recommendations adopted in the conference. Mr. Tekeste went on to assert that the NCEW would work closely with the TUFEA to make it the voice of workers in the region.
The participants of the conference visited Zaer Factors (formerly known as the Asmara Textiles Factory), during which they inspected the activities of the factory, which has a workforce of about 500.
The four-day regional conference was attended by trade union representatives from Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, Kenya, Djibouti, Seychelles, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Burundi and Mauritius, as well as other African and Italian trade union representatives.
