Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Martha Karua Thursday said the Party of National Unity coalition was willing to surrender some of the powerful ministries to ODM in the new coalition.

However, she told ODM to stop making unrealistic demands.

"We are ready to step down from some of the ministerial positions for the sake of unity of this country, but ODM should stop making unrealistic demands. They should stop making a lot of demands which make it look as if everything belongs to them," said Ms Karua.

But former Minister Maina Kamanda differed with her during the burial of former Embakasi MP David Mwenje in Murang'a saying ODM should fill the remaining vacant slots.

In the same function, the church accused the government and ODM leadership of abandoning the internal refugees as they wrangled over power.

Ms Karua said PNU had already agreed which posts to surrender but ODM that was pulling back the process by demanding everything.

Earlier, Mr Kamanda, the former minister for gender and sports, had called on President Kibaki to reject demands by ODM and appoint its members to the vacant ministerial posts.

"Those insisting on specific posts must have sinister motives. We have not forgotten that some of them were in the same positions in the past but failed to deliver," said Mr Kamanda.

Failed to deliver

He added: "What matters is not the position but what individual ministers plan to do to improve their ministry and welfare of Kenyans."

Mr Kamanda said a united Kenya cannot be realised when some leaders were chest thumping and making threats when things did not go their way.

The former Starehe MP said somebody from Mount Kenya region should be appointed a deputy prime minister.

PCEA priests who conducted the mass said politicians had abandoned the internal refugees as they engaged in power sharing fights.

Led by the Rev James Kaniaru and Joseph Gichinga who conducted the funeral service, said the church also called for prosecution of those who incited the violence.

Ms Karua read the President's condolence message, which described Mr Mwenje as a nationalist, devoted servant of the people "and that was why he managed to capture the Embakasi seat".
