The East African Classic Golf Series, one of the country's most popular golf series, makes a return to Nakuru after an absence of four years.
The last time the par 73 Nakuru Golf Club course hosted a qualifying round in the series was in 2004. This weekend's tournament, which is the second leg in the 2008 series, was to take place on February 23 following the first one held at Nanyuki Sports Club on February 9. It was, however, postponed until this weekend because of the post-election violence that saw the government impose a 7 pm to 6 am curfew in Nakuru.
A field of 138, including guests and staff of the Nation Media Group, which has sponsored the series since 1996, was drawn to battle it out for over a dozen prizes in addition to an automatic qualification to the grand finale for the top six players two from each of the three divisions.
Although the format this year remains stableford, off full handicap, the main prizes and the six qualifying slots will be based in three divisions.
Division A will be open to handicap nine and under while B division will be for those playing off 10 to 18 and the last division (C) will feature players in handicap 19 and over.

This way, each player will have a chance to feature on the prize list. The motive for this is to also inspire players to play better golf hence graduate to the lower handicap divisions which should be the ultimate goal of every golfer. The Nation Media Group has decided to support the development of the sport in the country through the Junior Golf Foundation by matching shilling for shilling the extra Sh200 out of the entry fee of Sh500 being paid by each player participating in this year's East African Nation Classic golf series.
Junior Golf Foundation chairman, David Mogere, will be at Nakuru to explain to golfers what programmes the foundation is embarking on this year. In order to attract more participation in the Classic, NMG is offering attractive prizes not only in the qualifying rounds but in the grand finale as well.
The overall winner in the grand finale will have a chance of winning a grand prize that will include return air ticket for two plus accommodation for four nights in a five-star hotel in Dubai during the 2009 Desert Classic or to play a Pro-Am in South Africa. Action is open to players from Nakuru, Naivasha SC, the Great Rift Resort, Njoro and Nyahururu.
