Some 86 Nairobi City councillors collected Sh 30,000 each Thursday for a retreat to the Coast, even as council workers went on strike over salary arrears.

The councillors who were going for a two-day induction course in Mombasa received allowances, totalling Sh 2.5 million and ignored the striking workers demanding salary arrears of Sh492 million.

Mayor Geoffrey Majiwa confirmed that the civic leaders received the allowances to proceed for the training to help them understand council standing orders. "Why don't you ask how much the MPs received to attend an induction course at Safari Park (Nairobi)?" He posed. But the mayor could not explain why the induction had to be done at the Coast and not Nairobi where it would be less costly.

The Mayor said the course had been planned long before the workers went on strike.
