Bayelsa State government yesterday described as untrue speculations that the House of Assembly might commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Timipre Sylva over alleged N60billion loan the government obtained from five banks.

Defending the N60billion loan it collected from consortium of banks, the state government explained that with the state allocation from the Federation Account dropping to about N6billion and about N100million monthly from internally generated revenue, government had no choice but to seek the loans to finance projects that would impact meaningfully on the people of the people.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Dr George Fente in a statement in Yenagoa said the rumours of the alleged plot to impeach the governor were misleading and untrue meant to cause disaffection among the people of the state.

The governor's aide who described the relationship between the executive and the legislative arm in the state as cordial condemned the alleged move by some individuals and groups to incite the lawmakers against the governor and his administration.

He faulted claims by the Action Congress in the state that the present administration obtained loans without due process, arguing that the House of Assembly was aware of the loan considering government genuine desire to make transparency and accountability its watchword.

Dr. Fente pointed out that the loan was backed with instrument of power and due process because the governor informed the legislative arm of government of his intention during the presentation of the 2008 budget proposal in the assembly.

The Special Adviser who noted that the lawmakers are aware that the dwindling revenue from the federation account and the internally generated income will not be sufficient to sustain the current budgetary provisions explained "it is not realistic for the governor to seek the approval of the legislature to obtain a loan considering the fact the Speaker Werinipre Seibarugu led assembly had already passed the 2008 budget in which the issue of the bank loan was mentioned."
