Minibus operators on the Mombasa-Lamu route will increase their fares by 15 per cent from April 1.

Operators interviewed Thursday said the high cost of fuel and spare parts had forced them to increase fares from Sh600 to Sh700.

Tawakal Bus transport manager, Nassir Kassim and his Tahmeed counterpart, Saad Faraj said in separate interviews that fares had not gone up for the past four years despite the constant fuel price rises.

The operators denied that they were increasing fares to cash in on the expected upsurge of travellers who are expected to attend the Maulidi celebrations, that start on Wednesday next week.

TSS Bus Company transport manager Fahmi Ahmed Hamid, however, said his company would maintan its fare of Sh500 despite the high costs of fuel and spare parts.

All bus companies have reported heavy bookings by the Muslim faithful heading to Lamu and also because of the school holidays starting in the first week of April.
