A two-week national training course for radiation safety officers in diagnostic and interventional radiology for the North East zone has opened in Maiduguri with a call on the Federal Government to set up a Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority office in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The call was made by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Prof. Uthman Kyari at the opening ceremony of the course held at the university's school of nursing auditorium.
He called on participants and lecturers to avail themselves opportunity of visiting the radiology department and interact with members of staff. A department houses a large collection of state of the art facilities and highly trained staff.
Prof. Kyari also noted that the training course was designed to educate participants on national and international standard guiding the safe use of ionising radiation and the lectures were derived from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Adding that the training is timely as the department of Radiography, College of Medical Sciences of the University of Maiduguri, the only one in the Northern part of the country is about to graduate its first batch of radiographers.
Also speaking, Director General of the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA). Prof. Shamsideen Babatunde Elegba observed that the training is to create awareness and sensitise radiation workers in the health sector on the need for the establishment and sustainance of radiation protection programmes in hospitals and radiology centres across the country.
He noted that the training is necessary and timely as radiation has both immediate and long term effect that manifest in bone marrow depression, leading to anaemia alopecia (Falling of hairs), skin burn and protitis, and malignetis in any part of the body respectively. He Stressed that a survey carried out in 2004 and 2005 showed that there are over 4000-xrays machines in the country with less than 20 per cent of them registered under regulatory control.

Prof. Shamsideen also said that NNRA has the overall responsibility for nuclear safety and radiological protection and regulation in the country.
He revealed that Federal Government has concluded arrangement for the establishment of an office in the North - East but the location is yet to be decided. He urged the Borno state government to partner with his agency for the establishment of an office in Maiduguri.
The training is being organised by Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Vienna, Austria.
