Cameroon: North West - Bawock Rebuilding From Scratch

Yaboa Ndula

28 March 2008

Bamenda (Mezam) - The cry of the Bawock people to help rebuild the Fon's palace and the village was answered during a fund raising ceremony organized by the Bawock community in Bamenda. The launching of the fund raising ceremony at the Bamenda Congress Hall realized a sum of CFA 4.957.540 for the reconstruction of the ruined village.

Amongst those who reached out to the needy Bawocks were Fons, religious groups, NGOs, companies, individuals and some public figures in Bamenda. While addressing the people, the Fon of Bawock, Nana Theodore III revealed that after the horrible destruction, looting of crops and chasing of women from their farmlands is still a pertinent issue that needs to be checked. He evaluated the damages on the palace during the crisis to CFA 350 million but has however set up a new plan for a moderate palace at CFA 192 million. He equally promised to use the money judiciously and Nana Theodore was overwhelmed with the turn out especially with that of the fon of Bali Nyanga.

Opening the launching, the president of Fons of the South Province who doubled as the Chairman of the occasion Rene Effa Desire regretted the sad incident and told the Bawock people that it is high time they took their responsibility and reconstruct the village rather than crying over spilt milk. Reiterating Fon Rene Effa, His Excellency Achidi Achu Preached a doctrine of forgiveness, love, peace and unity. He stamped out the idea of vengeance and hatred from the minds of the Bawocks and urged them to look forward. Filled with remorse, the Fon of Bali sent a four-man delegation to support the fund raising. The co-coordinator of the Bawock Crisis Management Committee, Nubed Isaac revealed that they had an ecumenical service on March 6th 2008 focused on love, forgiveness, peace, and unity. He added that they have forgiven the Bali and that they are indivisible. It should be recalled that the Bali-Bawock misunderstanding that brought down the Bawock village to ruins took place on March 6th 2007. The fund raising exercise will continue in other parts of the country.
