A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced four persons to various jail terms for illegal pessession Indian hemp.

The convicts are Sani Adamu, Tasi'u Ibrahim, 27, Saifullahi Abdussalam, 18, and Sanusi Ya'u, 28.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola sentenced Adamu to two months and two days imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the possession of 250 grammes of a substance identified to be Indian hemp.

Adamu would also pay a fine of N2,500 or in default serve an additional one calendar month in prison.

Ibrahim, 27, was sentenced to one month and seven days in jail, with a fine of N6,500 for illegal possession of Indian hemp weighing 23.2kg.

Ibrahim was arrested on February 11, 2008 at Kwa in Kano State.

The court sentenced Abdussalam, 18, to 22 days in jail with a fine of N3,000, after he pleaded guilty.

Abdussalam would in addition attend the counselling lessons of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

He was arrested with a substance identified to be Indian hemp weighing 1.3kg at Sabon Titi quarters in Kano metropolis.

Ya'u, 28, was sentenced to one month, 13 days in jail, with a fine of N6,500 for illegal possession of 350kg of Indian hemp and a substance identified to be valium five.

Ya'u was also to serve another month and 13 days jail term with a fine of N240 for the second charge, or in default of the fine, serve an additional one calendar month in jail.
