Acting chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hon. Ibrahim Funtua, has said that Ministries, Extra-ministerial Departments and Agencies (MDAs) which fail to comply with the federal character guidelines and formulae would be made to face legal action.

"About 25 MDAs and their chief executives would soon face appropriate legal action, unless they take urgent steps to make amends. Some of them are currently being investigated, while investigations have been concluded in the case of others", he said.

Hon. Funtua made this known while interacting with news men at his office complex in Abuja yesterday. He added that the commission had warned all the MDAs at federal, state and local government levels that the era of persuasion was over. The acting chairman said, henceforth, the commission would not hesitate to initiate criminal action, as authorised by the constitution, against chief executives and principal officers of any MDA who fail to comply with the federal character guiding principles and formulae in its staff distribution pattern and in the process leading to staff recruitments.

He further appealed to qualified and competent candidates to always respond to advertisements for jobs outside their geo-political zones or states of origin or residence.

According to the chairman, the commission also enjoins state governments to show interest in the distribution of their indigenes in MDAs at the federal level, and to ensure that the staff distribution pattern of their MDAs take cognisance of the diversities of their respective states as demanded by section 14(4) of the constitution.

He commended President Yar'Adua for reflecting federal character in the political appointments made so far by his administration. Funtua also applauded security agencies for their cooperation with the commission.
