BAUCHI State Government has announced plans to distribute freely, treated mosquito nets to families in the state as part of efforts to ensure reduction and eradication of malaria among women and children in line with the declaration of UNICEF.

This decision was announced by the State Governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda when he granted audience to U.S. based organisation, Parkard and Bill Gate Foundation, at the Government House Bauchi, last Wednesday.

A visibly worried Yuguda said that the government took the decision in order to reduce the infection of malaria among women and children which according to him often lead to loss of lives particularly during birth.

The Governor further explained that his administration was encouraged by the unprecedented increase in the number of families patronising health facilities across the state, noting that from less than 100 per cent the figure has jumped to about 400 per cent in less than one year of his assumption of office.

He also expressed regret over the high rate of infant morbidity and maternal mortality in the state, saying that Bauchi has the highest in the country, which he attributed to the poor purchasing power and increase in population.

Governor Yuguda also revealed government's decision to set up primary health care agency and the agency for tuberculosis, leprosy, malaria, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases in order to reduce their spread just as he called for closer collaboration with the two foundations to help improve the health status of women, children and entire population of the state.

Speaking earlier, Country Director of the Packard Foundation, Dr. Mairo Mandara said the objective of the Foundation was to encourage Northern states governments to focus more attention on inadequacies in the health and education sector.
