One of the country's leading banks, Standard Chartered Wednesday donated Le 4,854,400 to the Sierra Leone Cricket Association to support the national team's participation in two international competitions.

The team is expected to participate in the second edition of the North/West Africa tournament scheduled to commence on 1 April in Nigeria.

The team will also compete in the ACA-ICC affiliate Africa World Cup division II tournament slated for between 13-18 April in Benoni, South Africa.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Standard Chartered, Albert Saltson said the bank is committed to building a sustainable business in the long term and is trusted in the country for upholding high standards of corporate governance, social responsibility and environmental protection.

"The bank's sponsoring the national team in both competitions is a clear manifestation of its strong commitment to our sustainability agenda," Saltson said.

The CEO also noted that, "Sports is a key area of focus in the bank's sustainability agenda taking into cognizance the Standard Chartered Group's Greatest Race On Earth (GROE) global marathon which was launched in 2004." He said the bank will not only focus on big sporting events but will also sponsor lesser known sports such as cricket which has received little or no public attention in the country.

"This bank believes in enhancing the capacity and encourage the budding of talents in the game of cricket and through that, it will bring laurels to the country," Saltson said.

While receiving the cheque, the association's Secretary General, Sidney Benka Coker said with Standard Chartered, they can achieve their goal.

"The team has received a special motivation from Standard Chartered. I believe we can go out there and restore the lost glory of cricket to the country," Benka Coker said.
