Zimbabwe: CIO Boss' Application Dismissed

Harare — The High Court last week dismissed an application by the Central Intelligence Organisation boss, Retired Major-General Happyton Bonyongwe, seeking to bar the weekly Zimbabwe Independent newspaper from republishing a story on his alleged fallout with President Mugabe.

One of the news agencies, ZimOnline, claimed that Rtd Maj-Gen Bonyongwe had links with aspiring independent presidential candidate Dr Simba Makoni's bid to topple President Mugabe from power. The agency claimed this was the first signal that a rift in the ruling party might be filtering down to the intelligence service. ZimOnline, which quoted unnamed authoritative sources, further claimed that the CIO was in the grip of a power struggle between Rtd Maj-Gen Bonyongwe and his deputy, Mr Maynard Muzariri.
