Botswana Golf Union (BGU) and Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) are jointly engaged in an annual fund raising youth development charity tournament dubbed 'Chip In For Youth'. The tournament takes place at Gaborone Golf Club today.

A statement by BGU secretary general Ben Tobedza and BRCS president Dr Nomsa Mbere says the two organisations have partnered to raise funds for the youth development programmes and to raise awareness on the HIV/AIDS. "We are asking you to chip in for kids and help us reach our goal of raising P100,000 for aforementioned Youth Development Programmes. This is an annual event and a premier charity golf event and will also be a fun-filled day for you and your guests or clients," reads the statement in part.

It states that BGU is faced with many challenges to achieve its goal of developing golf and positioning the sport as a premier and alternative game in Botswana. BGU relies on Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC), corporate sponsors and individuals to implement its development programmes.

Today's fund raising tournament is played in a relatively unfamiliar 18-hole four-ball American Scramble. It has a team competition with four players, combined with a worst and best ball format. After all players tee-off, the best-positioned ball is chosen. From the spot, each player drops their own balls and complete the hole themselves. At least three drives from each player must be used. The players with the best and lowest scores are added and recorded.

A pink ball will be provided for which a separate score will be recorded. The four players must use the pink ball in rotation for consecutive holes.

If the ball is lost, it is not replaceable. The four balls must record a zero score thereafter for the pink ball. The sequence of the pink ball rotation must be maintained after the first tee-off. A prize giving ceremony has been organised this evening where chief executive officer of First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) Danny Zandamela will give a keynote address.
