Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has ascertained that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate is qualified to contest for the Bukomansimbi parliamentary seat in the April 3 by-election.
"My lawyers have vetted Haji Idi Kisiki Lubyayi's academic papers and assured me that they are genuine and substantial. It is now upon you to vote for him and allow my programmes for Bukomansimbi go ahead," the President said.
Lubyayi lost the seat last month after court ruled that he lacked the academic qualifications to be an MP.
The minimum qualification is an A'level certificate or its equivalent.
Museveni who was on Friday in Bukomansimbi to drum up support for the NRM candidate addressed a gathering in several trading centres before holding a big rally at Buyoga in Kibinge Sub-county.
The President cautioned the people against voting for candidates opposed to development. He cited politicians who he said frustrated plans to build a 250MW hydro-power dam at Bujagali.
"You are now crying of electricity shortfall because some people picked bad MPs including Ken Lukyamuzi, John Kazoora, Miria Matembe, Salaamu Musumba and Frank Nabwiso who fought the Bujagali project," Museveni said.
Also in the Bukomansimbi race are the Democratic Party's Deogratius Kiyingi, Mohammed Kateregga of the Justice Forum and the Conservative Party's Asiya Nasuuna Kamulali. Three independent candidates - Musa Mbaziira, W. B. Kamoga Sakka and Michael Lubambula Kalumba - are also contesting.
