Kampala — SECURITY personnel on Thursday afternoon stormed the offices of the Independent magazine, searching for an ex-UPDF soldier.

Andrew Mwenda, the managing editor of the Independent, said Lt. Godfrey Masaba had gone to their office to narrate how he had been tortured by security operatives.

Mwenda said Masaba had told him that he used to belong to a special unit of the UPDF known as Unit 181, that used to carry out operations in northern Uganda.

According to Mwenda, the operatives, who included officers from the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, Rapid Response Unit and Internal Security Organisation, stormed their offices at around 4:00pm.

"Masaba is very sharp. He has escaped from those operatives three times. I don't know how he left the building," Mwenda said.

He said the gatekeeper, Herbert Labejja, was mistaken for Masaba, arrested and taken to an unknown location.

Mwenda partly blamed the raid on a former employee, Charles Etukuri who he said was an intelligence operative who leaked the information about Masaba to security.
