Monrovia — The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced a US$1.4 million technical assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Acting USAID Director Lucretia Taylor made the pronouncement at the weekend during a signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Agriculture on 19th Street, Sinkor.

She said the technical assistance was intended to strengthen and develop Liberia's expertise and capacity to achieve agriculture sector reform.

Mrs. Taylor explained that prior to the crisis in Liberia, the US government through USAID was Liberia's principal donor partner in the agricultural sector.

The Acting USAID Director indicated that it was strategically important to support the Ministry of Agriculture to expand on the transitional initiatives to implement the new strategy to raise production for the long-term economic growth and food security of the nation.

Mrs. Taylor recalled that since the post-conflict transition, USAID projects and partners have been working with the government and people in rural areas to revitalize small holder-farming and reintegrate rural communities.

In response, Agriculture Minister Dr. Chris Toe lauded the US government for the assistance it continues to render Liberia's agriculture sector. He assured the acting USAID Director of the implementation of agriculture projects under his administration.
