A potable water supply project in Dirko, Emni-Haili sub-zone, at an expenditure of about 5 million Nakfa has been finalized and is rendering service.

The project includes the digging of a 40-cubic meter well, construction of a 50-cubic meter water tanker, installation of a 4 km-long water pipelines and the construction of 7 water distribution stations, as well as other facilities.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Administrator of the sub-zone, Ms. Leul Asrat, indicated that a major micro-dam has been constructed and a master plan has been drafted in Dirko, in addition to securing reliable electricity supply. She further noted that there are plans to implement potable water supply projects that would serve about 4,000 people and that over 20 hectares of farmland lying below Dirko Micro-dam would be cultivated through drip irrigation.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Administrator of the Southern region, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein, called on the local inhabitants to utilize the fertile land that lies below the micro-dam so as to improve their living standards and achieve food security. Stressing the significance of introducing drip irrigation, Mr. Mustafa reminded members of the farming community to step up their efforts in harvesting crops 2 or 3 times a year.
