Liberia: GAC Admits Delays in Audit

Monrovia — The General Auditing Commission (GAC) is said to be experiencing some delays in conducting audits at four public institutions.

The commission attributed some of the delays to the slowness on the part of those being audited to compile their financial document for submission.

Notwithstanding, this unfavorable situation, the Commission says, its work would not be impeded to ensure that there exists accountability and transparency in government.

The GAC is presently conducting audits at the National Housing Authority (NHA), Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), Liberia National Lotteries and the county development fund which was being controlled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"It can be recounted that in late November 2007, the GAC commenced a comprehensive Transactional Audits on the Government of Liberia's Fiscal Year 2006/2007 published by the Ministry of Finance," a GAC statement said.

Amidst these challenges, the Director of Communication at the GAC, Saitta Johnson Monday said at a press conference that the commission remains committed to producing credible audit reports that would strengthen government's efforts aimed at securing debt relief for Liberia.

In order to produce a credible report, she disclosed that the commission has requested the assistance of some auditors from the Zambia Auditing Office.

She noted that these auditors were presently in the country to assist the newly recruited auditors at the GAC in their audits engagement so as to gain experience.

According to her, the commission is presently building the capacity of its 148 newly recruited staff by providing intensive training in difficult audit areas which are essential to their performance.

She said these areas include information technology training and some international programs.

The GAC is currently engaged in two major audits including financial and forensic, but it is to shortly introduce Performance, Environmental, Regularity and Information Technology System audits as to broaden the scope of auditing in Liberia.
