Monrovia — Right To Play Liberia (RTPL) has broken ground for the construction of a recreation center at the King Gray community adjacent the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.
Estimated at US$61,000, facilities at the center would include a children's play containing slide jungle bars, see-saws and merry-go-round, a basketball court and a resource center also containing a multi-purpose hall.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Country Manager of Right To Play Liberia, David Sombie said although the Ministry of Youth and Sports sets a goal to have at least one youth recreation center in every county, but his organization saw the need to augment government's efforts by initiating the program.
He said the building of recreation centers is not the core business of Right To Play, but they are helping to transform the country, adding "if everyone joins such efforts government's development agenda would be realized."
Mr. Sombie disclosed that his organization has succeeded in galvanizing the required funding for the construction of the center.
He indicated that a tripartite memorandum of understanding would be signed between the RTPL, Ministry of Youth and Sports and the King Gray Community for the maintenance of the facilities upon completion.
He also said the Ministry of Youth and Sports provided the land for the construction of the center and would provide technical support for the smooth operation of the center.
For his part, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister for Development Sam Hare thanked Right To Play for the construction of the center to mold the minds of the youths.
For his part, the Chairman of the King Gray community, Moses Gussine commended RTPL for the project and promised that the facility would be maintained and used to tap the talents of the youths in the area.
