Parliament speaker, Roberto de Almeida regrets loss of human lives at DNIC building tragedy

The National Assembly (Parliament) of Angola regretted on Monday in a communiqué the loss of human lives due to the collapse, on Saturday at dawn, of the National Criminal Investigation Department (DNIC) headquarters and expresses its total solidarity with the mourning families.

In the communiqué, signed by the speaker of the National Assembly, Roberto de Almeida, the parliament recognises the engagement of the Home Affairs Ministry and of all organisations involved in the rescuing of victims and removal of the debris.

The document also highlights the efforts of the National Police, of the Fire-fighters Department, National Civil Protection Service, Angolan Armed Forces, National Reconstruction Department, Red Cross, Health Ministry, Media and companies that granted equipment and manpower voluntarily to assist in the extremely urgent task.

"We express our utmost recognition to all those who actively dedicated themselves to save citizens directly affected by this tragedy and address our sorrow to the mourning families", reads the note.

The number of deaths of the collapsed DNIC building increased from 15 to 25 until late Monday confirmed the co-ordinator of the Civil Protection Services, Eugénio Laborinho.

On the other hand, the Civil Protection official affirmed that 147 people were rescued alive, and some are still receiving medical assistance in various hospitals.

The ex-building of DNIC, which had seven floors, collapsed at around 04:30am on Saturday, and the causes of the tragedy are still unknown.
