Angola: President's Commitment to Peace Highlighted

The deputy-chief of General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) for Social Sphere, General Maurício Amado Zulu, Tuesday in Luanda highlighted the commitment of the Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo Santos, to the effective peace the country enjoys for six years.

General Zulu said this at the end of a ceremony aimed at paying homage to the Angolan Armed forces and to National Police staff killed in defence of the independence and territorial integrity, held at Camama's cemetery, Kilamba Kiaxi district, as part of the beginning of celebrations' programme of 4 April, the date of the country's peace attainment.

"This peace was the result of efforts and personal commitment of the President José Eduardo dos Santos and the good will shown by the Angolan people", stressed the general, who laid, along with other generals and high-ranking officers of FAA, a wreath of flower on the tomb of unknown soldier.

He also seized the occasion to, on behalf of FAA's General Staff, express the deep consternation in memory of the victims of tragedy occurred Saturday following the collapse of the National Criminal Investigation Department (DNIC) seven-storey building which claimed some 30 lives.

The country commemorates next Friday the 6th anniversary of effective peace, signed on 04th April, 2002, in Luanda, by the Government's Armed Forces and former Unita military force, the Memorandum of Complementary Understanding to Lusaka Protocol.

In the Presence of the President of Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, commander-in-chief of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA), and the testimony of the international community, generals Armando da Cruz Neto, then FAA chief of staff and Abreu Muengo Ukuachitembo "Kamorteiro", for ex-Unita Military Forces (FMU), signed the document.
