Kenya: Displaced People Confront DO Over Stolen Donations

Robert Nyasato And Peter Mutai

2 April 2008

Nairobi — A district Officer accused of stealing relief aid escaped lynching in Nyamira District.

Police officers saved him from displaced people, who were threatening to burn his official car.

Five tents suspected to have been donated to displaced people were recovered in his residence.

The mob had barricaded the road to prevent the vehicle, which they found parked in the camp early morning yesterday, from leaving. They held the DO hostage in his office from 4am to about 8am.

The DC, Mr Muktar Ali, OCPD, Mr Timothy Kivuva, and DCIO, Mr Jacob Muchai, questioned the DO for about three hours.

Also recovered were 10 iron sheets, which some people claimed were donated by ODM leaders last year.

But the DO said they were his, and that the vehicle was transporting items belonging to two nurses who had been transferred.

The DC said: "It is unfortunate that some of you (displaced people) are sleeping in the cold yet tents are being sold."

A source said there was a commotion at night between a senior administrator and an Administration Police officer.

"The AP threatened to shoot the administrator if he forcibly entered the store, but he (administrator) left," said the source.

Meanwhile, police are investigating politicians in Nakuru for allegedly inciting displaced people to demonstrate against the Government.

Addressing displaced people at Afraha Stadium and Nakuru Showground, the DC, Mr Christopher Musumbu, said plans to resettle the displaced were under way.

He warned conmen who were registering as displaced people to get compensation that they would not get away with the act.
